When a large pharmaceutical company in the Cork area started to experience problems with one of their on line process cooling chiller units, a quick call by their refrigeration engineers to Watkins Hire Ireland helped to reassure management that production would not have to be affected by the increase in summer temperatures.
On a circuit consisting of four 140kw chillers, one chiller was only producing around 50% cooling at 2c instead of 0c. As a result action had to be taken. With the help of Brian Woods, Watkinshire’s specialist regional manager, a decision was reached. Until a review of the chiller plant could take place a 170kw Trane chiller rental unit would be hired direct from Watkinshire Ireland.
The Chief engineer said “The chiller hire equipment supplied by Watkins Hire was impressive, the chiller came with built-in pump and buffer tank was rapidly delivered to site.”
Unfortunately, as the Watkins Hire chiller unit arrived on site via a hiab lorry, a second process cooling chiller experienced a major breakdown. On examination, the evaporator required repair and the chiller unit had to be shut down. This unit provided cooling on a separate circuit at -5c, however both cooling circuits fed into a central holding tank from where cooling was controlled and pumped directly to the production lines.
With production now at risk, the refrigeration engineers asked Watkins Hire if it was possible for the rental chiller unit to reach -5c. The reply was that at Watkins Hire our chiller units can reach down to -12c and -18c on request.
The plan was simple, the Watkinshire Trane chiller would run at -7c and replace the broken down chiller unit. The cooling requirement for the process circuit was now reached by the addition of the Watskinhire Trane 170kw chiller feeding the holding tank at -7c and the continuous running of the other cooling circuit feeding the holding tank at 0c/2c.
Both the refrigeration engineers and management team of the pharmaceutical company were highly impressed by the flexibility of the rental chiller unit. The connection was easy, with the chiller unit being fully self contained with only two flexible hoses needing to be connected between it and the downed chiller circuit plus its electrical supply.
The refrigeration engineers were amazed by the condition of the rental unit, “it looks new and it’s also the quietest chiller on site.”
