Top tips when hiring temporary heating or cooling equipment

December 17, 2009

Many companies have a regular repeating need for the hiring in of either Portable Heating or Air Conditioning equipment, for others it may just be an occasional requirement or an emergency situation. Irrespective of whichever one you fall into, here are some simple tips you may wish to consider.

1. Follow the manual

Many of the basic problems encountered by hirers could be removed by better following the instructions for both siting and operating the equipment properly.

It is vital to ensure that you do a proper handover with the hire supplier and take note of any special instructions. Then the communicating of his information to anyone else on your team who may need to take responsibility for the kit is essential.

Simple matters such as, ensuring you only plug equipment in to a suitable mains supply can help prevent unnecessary time consuming and frustrating breakdowns and ensure you get the most from your hired in equipment.

2. Talk it through

It’s really important to talk through the needs of your business, not just your temporary heating and temporary cooling requirements with your HVAC hire specialist. Only then can you ensure that you’re hiring kit that’s fit for purpose.

For example, you don’t want diesel fumes in a closed environment or noisy equipment close to a residential area. The equipment way well fit in the area where you need it, but have you considered access?

Any reputable HVAC rental specialist will be able to help you look for all these hidden problems that could arise if a correct and thorough site survey has not been completed.

3. Beware hidden costs

When you’re hiring equipment, it can be tempting to select the kit you need based on the hire cost, but this can be short sighted. Not all hire fleet is new! Ask the HVAC rental specialist the age of the kit they will offer you.

The equipment with the lowest cost per week hire charge could end up costing you much more because of the amount of fuel or energy it uses. For example, not all heaters are the same; some new IDF heater units are far more efficient than others and by a long way! A little time invested here can save much overall cost.

Again, a specialist temperature control solutions provider will advise you on the likely whole hire cost of equipment and help you make a sound decision based on both real overall costs and suitability for the application. Watch out for companies whose rental charges go up with extremes in temperature and where you can pay a premium for no good reason!

4. Select a specialist

When it comes to hiring specialist heating and cooling equipment, you want to know that you have the right piece of kit for the job, and get expert advice on how it works, what it can do and how to make the most of it. With a general hire company that kind of specialist knowledge simply isn’t available.

If you need temporary portable heaters or portable air conditioner equipment look for a company that specialises in temporary heating and cooling solutions because that’s where you’ll get the best advice. Also make sure that for full peace of mind you select a natiowide climate control hire company that can offer you 24/7 service and support.

5. Challenge the specialist!

Where you have no HVAC hire company experience or referrals to guide you and no prior knowledge, use the web and be specific with your key-words in your “google” search.

Does the Specialist HVAC hirer’s web site prove that they are working in your specialist sector, say the Facilities Management Market? Check out their similar type applications. You will soon see-through the ones that are not up to it; it will be worth while to take a few moments to consider what you need. So include Key Words that correctly cover your project, be specific. There are some very good HVAC Hire Specialist companies out there. It is worth finding them.

You could start off your search with Watkins Hire Limited and it could save you a deal of time too!

6. Last thought

Once you have done the above, checked the web and look at a number, then call 1, 2 or 3 HVAC Specialists and maybe prefer those where you don’t deal with temporary staff in call centres and those where you do speak with the temperature control hire specialist directly!

Watkins Hire has scored a major coup by recruiting Nick Campey from rival firm Andrews Sykes to head up the firm’s new National Accounts Division. Nick begins his new role as national accounts director at Watkins Hire on 1 December, marking a major milestone in the company’s continuing development as a key player in the Specialist HVAC hire sector. His remit is to establish the new division with consistent processes for handling larger, national clients and to build a National Accounts team, working closely with Watkins Hire’s existing sales and service teams.

Nick Comments

“Watkins Hire is a very dynamic business that has grown significantly over the past few years and already has a number of large, national clients. With the establishment of a national accounts division the firm is stepping things up a gear, ensuring that we are fully equipped to continue increasing our market share.”

Nick’s appointment follows the announcement in October that Terry Stevens-Smith had left his national accounts manager role at Andrews Sykes to take up a similar post at Watkins Hire. This established working partnership will now focus on increasing Watkins Hire’s national accounts and adding value to the company’s existing clients, focusing in particular on the public sector, facilities management, IT and telecoms industries.

Mark Hills, managing director of Watkins Hire adds

“This will not be the first time that Nick has set up a national accounts division from scratch. His talent and experience will ensure the new division is up and running quickly and smoothly and we’re delighted to have him on the team.”

Vets Warm To Watkins and Keep Pets In Safe Hands

October 16, 2009

news_vet-water-heatingVeterinary practice, Rainsbrook Veterinary Group, was faced with running its busy surgery without a domestic hot water supply for a week – until temporary heating and cooling rental equipment specialist, Watkins Hire, stepped in to offer the firm an instant hot water solution.

A new boiler system installed at the Rainsbrook Veterinary Group practice in Leamington Spa required some essential maintenance work and shutting it down for a week while the work was carried out was unavoidable. At first, the Rainsbrook Veterinary Group team thought that they would have shut the practice or be forced to boil kettles to comply with strict hygiene standards, but after contacting Watkins Hire they discovered that a much faster, more economical and more convenient solution was available instead.

Explains Stacey Hammond from Rainsbrook Veterinary Group Vets: “The loss of our hot water supply was a business critical issue for us as we need to be able to wash our hands thoroughly to maintain hygiene standards. When we contacted Watkins Hire they suggested their portable emergency hot water tank and we had hot running water with an hour of it arriving.”

Designed to provide a domestic hot water supply via simple connection to the cold water tap, the Watkins Hire portable emergency hot water tank resembles a yellow wheelie bin and is simply wheeled into place and plugged in to an ordinary 13 amp socket. The tank’s 3kW immersion heater can then heat up to 55 litres of cold water to a temperature of 60°C within an hour at a cost of around 20p, providing ample, low cost hot water. The heated water then stays hot for up to 24 hours and even when it’s unplugged heat loss from the unit is less than half a degree per hour.

Comments Chris Easterlow from Watkins Hire: “Our portable emergency hot water tank is installed in minutes and delivers a reliable hot water supply within an hour. What’s more it is a very cost effective option and transportation costs are very low as it can fit easily into the back of a small van. For Rainsbrook Veterinary Group, that meant that they could get on with doing what they do best….treating sick animals.”

Portable electric boiler hire available from Watkins Hire

September 2, 2009

22kw portable electric boiler

22kw portable electric boiler

Boiler Hire specialist, Watkins Hire, can now offer customers even more choice when specifying temporary heating and hot water solution following the launch of the ‘HeatGen 22’ 22kW portable electric heating and hot water boiler to the company’s extensive hire range.

Compact and easy to connect to existing pipework using flexible hoses, the Watkins Hire HeatGEN 22 can deliver 22kW LPHW (low pressure hot water) of heating and hot water from 35°C to 85°C. The unit features a distinctive integral plate heat exchanger which keeps the primary and secondary water circuits separate. For the end user, this means that any contaminants in the water system that could affect performance are prevented from entering the unit, enhancing reliability.

“The HeatGEN 22 is an important addition to our range and is ideal for all kinds of applications from breakdowns and disaster recovery through to occupied refurbishments,” comments Rob Kemp of Watkins Hire. “The integral heat exchanger mounted on the unit makes it particularly suitable for sensitive underfloor heating systems, and the product is backed, as always, by Watkins Hire’s personal service. We believe that this is the only product of its kind on the market and therefore expect interest and sales to be extremely strong.”

Speed of installation is also a key benefit of the HeatGEN 22, enabling Watkins Hire to put a fast, fuss-free solution in place in any boiler breakdown situation. The unit has automatic air relief valves on the primary and secondary heating circuits for efficient air removal during commissioning. Another unique feature is an integral single phase power supply, which allows a secondary circulating pump to be connected to the unit without any additional wiring and the connection is fully electrically protected with RCD protection, enhancing health & safety for the end user’s staff/occupiers.

Kemp continues: “There are so many considerations when selecting a temporary heating and hot water boiler solution and the Watkins Hire team is always on hand to offer sound advice. This new portable electric boiler hire unit ticks all the boxes in terms of reliability, performance, health & safety and convenience.”

Air Conditioning Hire Specialist Watkins Hire awarded five year contract

August 24, 2009

Air Conditioning Hire Specialist, Watkins Hire, has won a five year contract to supply and install air conditioning for The International Cheese Awards – Nantwich after impressing the show’s organisers with the installation at the 2009 event.

Overhead ducting providing air conditioning inside the marquee

A high profile event attracting 28,000 visitors, The International Cheese Awards combines a trade show with a public event, with 2,761 producers exhibiting their cheeses this year. The perishable nature of the exhibits has presented problems for the show organisers in previous years and for the past three years they have used three separate air conditioning hire providers in an attempt to find a robust solution that would meet any climactic conditions. After a proactive approach from Watkins Hire, the show organisers accepted the hire company’s quote and have been so impressed with the result that they have signed Watkins Hire up for the next five years.

Keeping the marquee cool throughout the farmers’ market and the one day show is absolutely critical to the success of the event,” explains Show Director, Roger Mills. “The Watkins Hire team was not only able to specify and provide the equipment that we needed to do the job effectively throughout the event, they also provided us with excellent service levels and competitive pricing. We have been so impressed that we have been happy to commit to using Watkins Hire as our temporary air conditioning supplier for the next five years.”

Watkins Hire provided three 500kW rental chillers to keep the 110m x 40m marquee at the required temperature along with seven 150kW air handling units, all sited outside the marquee. The company installed fourteen 40m long ducting tubes across the width of the marquee, distributing the air conditioned air equally across the marquee. In addition, Watkins Hire installed twelve 20kW indoor air handling units in the hospitality tent, specifying a low noise, unobtrusive unit to provide the required ambient temperature. The Hire specialist also provided an on-site engineer for three days to ensure that the system ran efficiently throughout the show and its build up.

“Our attention to detail and emphasis on customer service enabled us to provide a temporary air conditioning service that surpassed that offered by our competitors in previous years,” comments Alan Ferguson from Watkins Hire. “We are delighted to have secured a long-term relationship with the show and look forward to next year’s event.”

With the forecast to swelter during a hot, dry summer this year, the TUC has called for the introduction of a legal upper limit on workplace temperature.

While employees are not expected to work when the temperature drops below 16-deg C (or 13-deg C if they do physically demanding work), there are no similar restrictions for when the workplace becomes too hot, the union body has pointed out.

It has said the law should be changed so that employers are forced to act when the temperature inside hits 24-deg C, and that staff could be sent home and their employers prosecuted if it soared to 30-deg C (or 27-deg C for those engaged in physically demanding work).

When temperatures reach these levels in the workplace, employees can suffer heat rashes, headaches, dizzy spells, fainting and heat cramps, it added. It also affects their concentration, making workers more likely to endanger their own or their colleagues’ safety.

Here is some advice on how to cool down and be more comfortable at work in hot weather. Many of these you can do yourself: some may need help from colleagues or facilities managers.

 Keep your workspace cool

1. Turn off any unnecessary equipment, including lights, on or near your desk (turn off rather than

to standby if possible) to reduce heat gains.

2. Try to keep direct sunlight off you and your workspace – use window blinds if provided. If you cannot keep out of the sun, ask if shade can be provided or if it is possible to work in a more shaded area.

3. Avoid leaving any equipment on standby, especially overnight.
